Image Impressions was a group exhibition curated by Faridah Folawiyo at the Vaughan-Richards House in Lagos, Nigeria. This landmark home— designed by famed architect Alan Vaughan-Richards and celebrated for its fusion of European modernism and traditional Nigerian architecture—hosted its first external exhibition, showcasing Nigerian artists from both the local scene and the diaspora.
Exploring the evolving relationship between painting and photography, the exhibition drew inspiration from J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere’s work to underscore photography's enduring role in contemporary Nigerian visual culture. It examined the influence of African studio photography, not only in shaping local identities but also in reframing perceptions abroad. Through themes of hybridity, self-fashioning, and memory, Image Impressions highlighted the studio portrait as a cornerstone of African and Nigerian artistic expression.
