Based between London and Abuja, Joy Matashi (B. 1992) practices at the intersection of architecture and hair. She describes hair as a form of “small architecture,” where the hair is matter- a material ground for identity- and the head is the foundation for styling i.e, braiding or wig making.
As a hair architect, she uses hair as a material to challenge the dichotomies between art and craft, to further conversations around beauty practices on a local level (Wuse Market, Abuja) to global scale.
