Clémence Appie Gbonon (b. 1994, France) is a French painter residing in Paris. She studied International Law at Auvergne University and Fine Arts at The Beaux-Arts, Paris. In 2022, she received an MFA from Cooper Union, New York.
“In my paintings and drawings, I render enigmatic Black figures in interior settings using a vibrant and specific palette. My work emphasizes on the embodiment of an escape in the representation of conflicted figures. These figures evoke an attempt to remove ourselves from stigma, demonstrating complexity and questioning Black identity itself.”
